Happy Valentine’s Day

As you probably know, Valentine’s Day is today. I know that people often say, “Valentine’s Day is just a silly holiday made up by the greeting card industry!” This usually is followed by reasons why a couple does nothing for this day.

I encourage you to see the day differently this year. Valentine’s Day is a reminder to make your partner a priority. In our lives, we are very good at putting work, kids, and responsibilities first. This often leaves little left for ourselves. We keep making excuses for why we do this, but the reality is your relationship suffers when you don’t make it a priority.

This year, find a way to get the kids out of the house. Send them to a friend’s house or Grandma’s house. (Or find a group of friends with kids who want date nights and find a way to trade off Fridays by watching each other’s kids). It can be any night this week.

Next, make your living room or basement cozy. Turn the lights lower, light some candles or even a fire in the fireplace. Put on some music from your high school days and just sit and talk to each other. A date does not have to have to cost a lot. It just requires time and effort. Remove all electronic devices from the room. Share fond memories. Ask new questions. Flirt a little or a lot. Just have fun.

No matter what you do, don’t let too many special days pass without making each other a priority. Happy Valentine’s Day! Love each other to the fullest!
